- Coined the term 'gene'
- By using Charles Darwin's theory on Pangenesis, he proposed that each characteristic is created by it's own carrier
- Developed his own theory of mutation based on his experiments with the Evening Primrose
- Similar to Mendel, during his experiments, the offspring of the parent plants often had significantly different phenotypes, leading him to call them a new species
- Despite his idea being right, it was not due to chromosomal mutations but instead chromosome duplication or polypolidy [2]
